Mastitis, An article by Dr Zahid Afzal DVM:

Hi this is Dr Zahid afzal from general veterinary hospital Lahore. Today I want to discuss a very common topic of dairy animals which I discussed in my YouTube Video specially cattle and buffalo. Topic name is mastitis and we will learn in this topic that how we can deal with such types and similar kind of conditions which we confused with mastitis. First of all I would like to start step by step, firstly we will discuss the introduction of mastitis I will explain it in simple words and in simple language so that everyone can understand that what is mastitis and how we can tackle out with it. Mastitis is basically inflammation of mammary glands and you can say that it's infection of mammary glands, this is a condition in which mammary glands got swollen and shows many type of symptoms such as spray form of milking, narrow line of milking, clots of milk during the milking and last but not the least bleeding during the milking. You can study the theoretical portion from any dairy science book but I will explain you here that how you can practically evaluate and treat this disease condition. As we all know the fact that this disease is caused by bacteria this bacteria could be of many types or many genres. So it's very important that we must use some antibiotic in this disease condition, and this is the point where almost every vet got confused that which type of antibiotic and which specified antibiotic is suitable in this disease condition. So I will explain here that which antibiotic is safer and which antibiotic have some side effects but it cause more effectiveness while treating that animal. We will take the mastitis according to its different types these types are confined to you only physical appearance of symptoms that is drop by drop milking, clots of milk during the milking, bleeding or blood came out in the milk during the milking and pus like discharge coming out during the milking. We will do almost same treatment but I will just change few items according to our symptoms. By going on the first symptom that drop by drop milking, we need to dilate the mammary canal. Here I would like to explain one thing that manual dilating of memory canal is not only the solution of this condition but we can dilate it by using some suitable and good medication. So here we will use two antibiotics, which boost up the effect of both antibiotics which we known as synergetic effect of drugs. The name of antibiotics are as following:

1.       Injection Gentamicin with the brand name of Gentafar at the dose of 10% that is 100mg of gentamicin in in 1 ml of that injection.

2.       The second injection which we use for this condition is amoxicillin.

At one side you will inject amoxicillin and on the other side you will inject gentamicin. Beside this you will also use

3.      Ketoprofen injection to control the inflammation of mammary gland and this will be the complete treatment of all kinds of mastitis that's mean you have to adopt these methods along with other symptomatic drugs mustly. In other words you can say that these three injections will be compulsory in all type of mastitis cases. Now come to the other point that drop by drop milking symptom, you can use orally a homeopathic medicine named as

4.      Wibrosal active and fibro fit these two homeopathic medicines will give you tremendous results.

Now the last important thing is the use of any mineral mixture because the antibiotic which we are using will automatically reduce the quantity of milk so the owner cannot bear this loss. So by using mineral mixture you will be maintaining the milk level of animal, by using this animal if in case reduce the milking then we can cover this up by the use of mineral mixture.

Now come to the next symptom which is a clots of milking coming out of mammory glands, you will repeat the same treatment as mentioned above for their drop by drop milking symptom and same procedure will be done. But in addition to this you will recommend owner for doing complete milking, if you don't suggest this then the clots will be continuously coming from mammory glands. Now come to the next portion or next symptom which is bleeding or blood coming out in the milk during the milking. Here you will also repeat the same treatment and the same procedure but with some additions. The addition is the use of vitamin K injection and   transamin injection to stop the bleeding and to coagulate the bleeding spots. Here you need to confirm firstly from the owner of animal that is there any wound history on the mammary gland and you can confirm it by yourself by doing a complete physical examination. If you found any wound then you must have to treat it that wound first, if you ignore this factor then the acuteness of this disease will be worse. In case if you found any wound over the mammary gland then use gentamicin topical cream or ointment for that. Suppose if your patient within 2 days is not responding from this treatment then you need to change the antibiotic that you can use trimethoprim and sulphadiazine as an alternative this is available with brand name of sulprim s and TriBercen. This is also an important antibiotic and you must have a question that why we did not use this antibiotic as a first priority, so my explanation in this regard is that this antibiotic is more powerful than simple gentamicin and amoxicillin and sometime it may cause some degenerative effects but in case of amoxicillin and gentamicin they are safe to use and they affect more rigorously but the only have one side effect which is decreasing the quantity of milk from a milking animal. I hope this practical analysis of my field practice will empower you and will improve your skill in dealing with the cases of mastitis which usually came in our way during the field practice. keep me updated and keep in touch for further future articles and also give me your precious suggestions and comments so that I can keep continue writing articles for you and making videos for you and keep posting books for you. Stay blessed
