Starting a Livestock Practice in Pakistan:

Hy..! This is Dr Zahid AFzal from General Veterinary Hospital Lahore. Today I’m here with you with the most demanding articling that how we can start a practice in livestock in Pakistan. I also uploaded video on this topic on YouTube where you can watch all the details. Here we should know few things about the rural areas of Pakistan, about their psychology and habitat. Mostly here in Pakistan the rural area’s framers are less educated and they don’t know the basic difference between a quack and a proper DVM doctor. They consider anyone with a handbag of medicine and a cylinder a Vet and doctor; they will never ever ask you about your qualification about your registration and other relevant information. They just need a person who can inject their animal with any ABC injection, without even knowing the fact that either this injection is good for that animal or not. So basically you are here to joining a community which doesn’t know anything about you and your profession. Here I would like to also discuss with a very big clash between VAs and Vets, vets says that VAs are quack and doing wrong practice in field and VAs says that Vets are not in field so that’s why we are in the field. So both parties should resolve their issue by a mutual understanding. Let’s come to the topic that how we can establish and start a livestock practice in Pakistan, so here I would like explain this step by step, so you can easily understand the procedure of establishing a Vet practice for livestock.

Misconception about Economy:

In this step first of all you all need to eliminate this factor that establishing a Vet clinic is very expensive and you need a very big and handsome amount to start this setup. I don’t believe in it I started my livestock practice just in Rs. 22000 (excluding the shop rent and one time investments). So basically this is a wrong concept that you need a very big amount to start this. If you can afford than you can make a big setup and range for this leads from 22000 to 2 Million rupees depending on that what you can afford.  So first of all you need to remove this concept from your mind, by this now you can easily focus on the other points to start procedure.

Practice Focus:

The next step is to make a focus that which kind of practice you want to do, following are the types of practices we usually use in Pakistan:

1.       Pets Practice

2.       Livestock Large Animals Practice

3.       Livestock small Animals Practice

4.       Equine Practice

5.       Reproduction Related Practice

6.       Mix Animals practice or General Practice

After deciding you focus now you can easily move forward to other steps. Here I would like to advice you that always select on unique practice by which people will more attractive towards you and it will also differentiate you from other Vets.

Location Selection:

This is the most important and basic thing you need to cover up at your first step. Without this you will never ever succeed in your practice. Just make a rough survey on your own that in which area there are the most of livestock present. Roughly there should be a 50000 to 60000 population of livestock should be present and this is the minimum.  Secondly Location should cover more villages on a single main road, as this will make you more convenient access to all areas. The Location of your clinic should be on Main Road not on by roads (although the rentals will be higher but accessibility will also be higher). If in case a by road is present than make sure that you have access to place your bill boards on main road and no one can remove them.

Competitors and Survey:

Make a complete survey about your competitor vets and then design your plan of future. Lesser the competitor will be higher your rising chances. So make sure in that area you have only few competitors, in them I’m not considering the quacks. Also VAs is also not competitors, DVM doctor are your competitors. Make some good communication with respective VAs so they can help you in establishment.

Cost Comparison and Cost of Clinic:

Establishing a very small clinic or medium type clinic you should know that what you need, below is few things which you required only one time and this investment will be for at least 4 to 5 years.

1.       A table (I’m using a table which I Purchased in 2014 and it’s still working good)

2.       A revolving normal Chair

3.       Surgical Kit of normal range should include Forceps, Sissors and other surgical related items.

4.       A bike to travel

5.       A good bag to keep medicines.

6.       A 20ml good BD Syringe

7.       Boards and Flexes

8.       Letter Heads

9.       Visiting Cards

10.   One Ai Kit if you want to do Ai in livestock animals

Above are almost onetime expense products and items, now come to the products which you may need regularly whenever you need it.

1.       2 Pieces of almost each type of antibiotic (One for clinic and one for Bag)100ml

2.       2 Pieces of good Liver Tonic

3.       2 Pieces of Steroids

4.       2 Pieces of NSAID of each type

5.       5 Pieces of de-wormer almost each brands

6.       5 Pieces of Mineral Mixture

7.       Any type of Stomach powders 5 Pieces

8.       Shop rent should 8000 to 10000 can be exceed to 15000 depending on location

9.       Fluid therapy related items 2 Pieces each

10.   Drip sets

11.   5 ml, 10ml and 60ml syringes. 10 Pieces each

Above are the items which should be present in your clinic and bag. Now let’s start practice. Following steps will help you the boosting up your practice.

Marketing:

Treating some poor’s animals with low cost and free of cost will make you more popular among others. Make sure your competitors are having high charges. Start always from a lower fee that will attract more clients toward you. Basically this will be your free of cost marketing, make sure that you are giving your visiting cards 10 persons on daily basis. Suppose if have gave your cards to 150 persons than believe it that almost 10 15 persons will be your permanent clients.

Psychological Impacts:

Always maintain your reputation and dignity. Don’t allow any farmer to degrade yourself and make sure that your way of talking is so effective that other person is automatically attracting towards you. If you can do than do some online course like I’m very soon offering for each category and mention these certifications on your visiting card and letter head, this will make your more impressive personality in front of framer.
