Lameness in Livestock:
Hy..! This is Dr Zahid Afzal from General Veterinary Hospital Lahore, today the topic on which I’m going to write is lameness in Livestock specially in Sheep, goat, cattle and Buffalo. If u want to watch the full Detailed video of today's than Click here. Even you can include horses in this treatment with a little change. First of all I would like to introduce about the Lameness, we know this word in different forms and we also witnessed many cases. Lameness is basically a striggling gait of animal i.e. animal is not walking properly either he/she is lymping or either he remain sit at his/her fix position. Whenever you will try to boost the animal for walking he will resist and even though when you move animal in a circular motion he will pull up his/her one leg upward due to pain in his/her legs. So basically you can assess that the pain and this type of walking is due to due muscular distraction, pull, stretching and rupture. If animal having all these problems than we use some common type no steroidal anti inflammatory drugs to overcome this issue but sometimes these drugs don’t work on that animal by which owner got disappointed from the Vet and his progress in treatment plan. So what we need here basically a skill and a proper technical plan of treatment by which we resolve all type of issues of that animal. I will explain that how many types of lameness and striggling gait could be present in an animal and what are the best possible ways to detect the exact cause of that lameness.
First of all we will have a patient with a complain of not walking properly and feeling pain, so first of all we will check the four hooves of that animals. If there is no symptom of any discharge and green yellowish area that we can say it’s non infectious lameness. In non infectious lameness we will not recommend and use any kind of antibiotic it could result in disturbance of stomach, and after that you may got a complaint from owner that animal is not eating properly. So avoid any kind of antibiotic in this situation. So now the question arise that what should be the best treatment for this kind of issue. So important thing is not always an antibiotic is a solution of all problems. Sometime symptomatic drugs could also result in complete recovery. So here is my best used formula for this kind of lameness, some vets may not be agreed with this but I used it multiple times and it gave me very good results. Following is the treatment plan
1. Injection. Ketoprofen
2. Injection. Flunixin Maglumine
3. Injection. Mepramine Maleate
Use above injections in animal and for sure animal will forget his/her pain within few hours. Beside this treatment there are few points which need to be remember as following:
1. Don’t use the same needle for above injections, this will make a white ppt which could result in death of animal.
2. Use 1 and 3 injection on same side of site of administration and rub it properly after injecting
3. Use 2 injection on one single side of site of administration.
4. Always rub and massage the area of injection to prevent the stoppage of injection.
5. Don’t use in pregnant animals.
6. Repeat the treatment exactly after 24 hours and for 3 days.
The entire above are injectables now use some of oral medications and in these medications I just prefer following:
1. Tablet. Nuberol Forte (Orphenedrine + paracetamol)
By using this the whole treatment plan will work more better than expected. Dosage should be thrice a day and one tablet for 50kg body weight. Now beside this we need to take some of herbal methods to overcome this problem. Which type of herbal method is best suitable for this kind of situation..? I have stated below:
1. 2.5 liters of water
2. 20 table spoon Iodine Salt
3. Neem Leaves
Boil all above ingredients for about 30 minutes unless the water quantity became 2 liters. Allow water to became Luke warm. Now wash the leg and affected area with this water four times a day. One session should be of 20 to 25 minutes. Wash in way that this water should fall in same tub so you will not need to make this solution every day. You can use this solution multiple times by heating this up repeatedly. This kind of treatment is rare and only practical working vets will adopt this, theoretical and book wormers will be against this treatment.
Now let’s discuss with the second type of Lameness which is infectious, checkout the hooves of animal if you found any type of discharge and yellowish or greenish area than this lameness is due to infectious wounds/abrasions. Treatment for this will be same; we just will remove few drugs and will add some drugs to cope up the infectious form. The lameness and pain animal will feel in infectious condition will be more sharp, animal will avoid to give permission to the vet for a detailed checkup. Following symptoms should be present if we are going to give any antibiotics:
1. Greenish or yellowish area of internal hooves.
2. Discharge from hooves
3. Smell from hooves.
4. Pain is in a rooting scheme i.e. from hooves to knee joint animal is feeling pain.
So after examining all the points now its time to get started the treatment. Following will be injectables:
1. Injection. Amoxicillin
2. Injection. Ketoprofen
3. Injection. Mepramine Maleate
4. Table Nuberol Forte
5. Neem Water therapy
6. OTC or Pink spray
Use above injection after exactly 24 hours for 5 days, Tablet as prescribed above thrice a day. Neem water therapy as mentioned above and apply this spray on inside of hooves to stop the proliferation of abscess or wound. I hope this topic will also encourage you to join the veterinary practice. I’m always in need of suggestions, so give me your precious suggestion on different topics so I will try focusing them and making videos on those topics.
